Job Overview

We are looking for an inspiring Team Leader who is able to drive culture change – bringing partners and stakeholders with them – and successfully manage a team to empower families and achieve positive outcomes. Using your experience in managing or co-ordinating projects, you will be able to design and implement systems and procedures that enable the business plan to be delivered, funder, stakeholder and family requirements to be met. Her Majesty The Queen has approved the Prime Minister’s recommendation that the Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion 2012 be awarded to Hammie, as announced in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Launched in 2004, the Award recognises individuals who have encouraged others into enterprise by promoting enterprise skills and attitudes in others. Each year up to 10 individuals are given the Award.

Hammie said: “I am delighted to have my work recognised in this way. My own success is a result of the hard work and dedication of my amazing client group and the businesses they run.”

Hammie has devoted the last 20 years to supporting over 6,000 individuals in business start-up, and she has helped to establish over 800 new businesses. Her clients include the long-term unemployed, people with disabilities or long-term sickness, ex-offenders and women returners. Quite often these social groups find it difficult to secure employment and have substantial social and health issues to overcome. Hammie has helped them to deal with these issues and to choose self-employment through development of a range of specialist materials to support differing learning needs, often going the extra mile and making herself available out of hours. She has also created strong networks with local, regional and national organisations, charities and businesses to assist them.

In a recent enterprise project, Learning Links in partnership with Hammie achieved the highest partner record of 52% of participants into self employment. Learning Links’s CEO continues to deliver social enterprise training and mentoring and is a member of the local Social Enterprise Cluster group and the Hampshire Isle of Wight Social Enterprise Network.

This summer she will be continuing in her dedication to enterprise support by delivering a 2 day course programme called ‘Taste of Enterprise’ in partnership with local charity Learning Links. The course will run 5 times over the year. Hammie has worked in collaboration with Learning Links for many years during which she has delivered a range of self employment programmes.

Zoe Gray, CEO, Learning Links said: “I am thrilled that Hammie has been recognised nationally for her success in empowering individuals to create and sustain self employment opportunities. Learning Links has chosen to collaborate with Hammie for many years in creating enterprise success because she is so inspiring in raising enterprise ambition, and enabling success amongst individuals and groups whose potential is so often overlooked.”

Laurence Keynes, Enterprise Adviser, Newport Jobcentre Plus said : “Ms Tappenden recognises to create a successful entrepreneur you must take a holistic approach that will include addressing issues far beyond the proposed business. Through her wide range of contacts and knowledge, she will always seeks to not just advise and empower an individual to be more enterprising but will also network them with other start ups or established businesses to improve their chances of success.”

Hammie will be presented with the Queen’s Award and attend a reception at Buckingham Palace given by HM The Queen, in the Autumn.

For the last 25 years, Hammie has spent her spare time working aboard the Tall ships STS Lord Nelson & SV Tenacious with the Jubilee Sailing Trust sailing around the world. These are the only two tall ships in the world designed and built to enable people of all physical abilities to sail side-by-side as equals.

Hammie is a Project Manager, Freelance Business Trainer / Counsellor and Coach. Her company, In to Biz Ltd, provides innovative bespoke training & coaching solutions for projects run in the community. It specialises in working with groups and individuals to engage them in activities leading to self-employment, education, volunteering or finding a job. www.intobiz.co.uk

Registered Charity Learning Links (Southern) Ltd is one of the latest groups to receive money from BIG’s Improving Futures programme, which will provide more joined-up and earlier support to families with multiple and complex problems.

BIG’s backing will see families whose eldest children are aged five to ten years old being offered tailored support from local voluntary sector organisations working in partnerships with public services.

For the ‘Families Moving Forward’ project, Learning Links will work in partnership with Portsmouth City Council, Portsmouth CAB, Relate – Portsmouth & District , The E C Roberts Centre, Homestart Portsmouth, and YOU Trust.

The four-year project will provide a menu of flexible support to 260 families in Portsmouth. A dedicated key worker will work with families to identify and prioritise needs and will offer support, including out of hours, to help them address problems and work towards their own long term goals.

Services will include financial advice including debt and housing advice, behaviour change training to improve health, as well as family and individual counselling, parenting and childcare support, and services to address substance misuse and domestic violence. A range of information and advice will be provided to address training and employment progression, return to work preparation and training including basic skills. Volunteer opportunities will be developed within the project and across partner agencies.

Fiona Dempsie, Big Lottery Fund’s Head of the South East region, said: “Learning Links and its partners are focused firmly on improving the wellbeing and life chances of young children by supporting their families.

“Too many families in difficult circumstances still don’t know who to turn to for help with well-meaning agencies often acting in an uncoordinated way that doesn’t help resolve the problems families are facing. By mobilising all those who can help at a local level – not just big charities, also small ones, volunteers, peers and schools amongst others – in a coordinated way, Learning Links aims to pilot and explore the new ways of improving the lives of some of the most vulnerable children in Portsmouth.”

The Improving Futures programme will distribute up to £26 million in total and will see see some of the largest charities working together with some of the smallest community organisations and local public services to trial a range of family interventions.
